  राजा विजय कुमार एक विशाल और समृद्ध राज्य नौगढ़ के शासक थे। शुरू में उनका शासन काफी अच्छा रहा , जहां पूरे राज्य में समृद्धि थी पर जैसे-जैसे उनकी उम्र बढ़ती गई , उनके शासन शैली में दिक्कत आने लगी। वे राज्य का काफी धन बेकार कामों में लगाने लगे , जिस कारण से कई मंत्री और राज्य के लोग उनसे नाराज हो गए थे। राजा ज्यादा समय नृत्य देखने में व्यतीत करने लगे , जिससे कि रोजमर्रा राज दरबार में अमान्य स्थिति आ गई थी।  राज्य के कई मंत्री और सैनिक राजा के व्यवहार से दुखी और चिंतित रहते थे। लोगों ने कई बार राजा को समझाया कि वह थोड़ा ध्यान राज पाठ पर भी दें पर राजा ने उनकी एक न सुनी ! उनकी इस लापरवाही का फायदा जल्दी ही दुश्मन उठाने वाले थे। उसी राज में भानूमल नाम का मंत्री रहता था , जो राजा से इर्ष्या करता था। उसने जब देखा कि राजा का ध्यान अपने राज्य पर नहीं है तो उसने राजा को गद्दी से हटाने की सोची। सबसे पहले उसने दरबार के कई मंत्री को अपनी तरफ शामिल किया और फिर एक रात उसने राजा विजय कुमार को उनके कक्ष में ही मार डाला। रातों रात राजा को मारने के बाद भानूमल ने राजा के करीबी और परिवार वालों को मारना
